These outdoor professionals are more than just individuals licensed to lead hunting, fishing, and outdoor excursions; they are custodians of a proud heritage, entrusted with preserving the essence of Maine's woods and waters for generations to come.

There is a rigorous testing process to become a Registered Maine Guide. To start, all new applicants must be currently certified by the American Red Cross in standard first-aid or a similar and approved course.

Embarking on the journey to become a professional Maine guide is both a challenging and rewarding endeavor. The path requires extensive training and preparation to ensure you are fully equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge. There are currently approximately 6,300 licensed guides in Maine. 



Training and Preparation

Becoming a Maine guide involves rigorous training designed to help you discover your strengths, learn new skills, gain confidence, and understand the requirements for both the oral and written testing portions. A well-structured training program is essential to prepare for the various aspects of the guide certification process. The training program follows a state-approved curriculum for Recreation, Fishing, and Hunting Guide Licenses. This ensures that all the necessary topics and skills are covered comprehensively.

The Testing Process

The certification process involves both written and oral examinations conducted by the Inland Fisheries & Wildlife department.By following the state-approved curriculum, mastering practical techniques, and engaging in comprehensive test preparation, you can confidently approach the certification exams. Each new guide applicant must pay a $125.00 fee for each classification to be examined to become a guide. Once licensed, you will be able to guide clients in a variety of outdoor activities, ensuring their safety and enjoyment in the beautiful wilderness of Maine.
